Pin Cushion Dolls or Half Dolls were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The holes are where a fabric skirt was stitched to the figure. The large skirts were used to cover teapots, whisk brooms, powder boxes/bottles, and were often padded and most commonly used as a pin cushion. Most are made of porcelain, but some can be found in metal, wax, plaster, or plastic. The retail cost of some of these pieces can range from $50 – $600 and were predominantly made in Germany and Japan, and are stamped on the back.
